ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:
A figure writing by candlelight, surrounded by books and soft shadows. I think of it as a quiet dispatch, from inside the storm—a reminder that letter-writing itself can be an act of protection. Like a cry for help or a call for connection, when the outside world feels uncertain.
A bat appears, as though it’s maybe a bit impatient to carry the letter to it’s intended recipient.
The title "Dear Kate" refers to Kate Horowitz who wrote the short story, "Witch Post", with me, which is the inspiration for this painting.
About Witch Post:
"Witch Post" is a seven-part story that grew out of a joy-seeking pandemic collaboration with writer Kate Horowitz, who lives in Maine, USA. We exchanged letters and built the story together one piece at a time, placing ourselves within it as witches.
Writing in character allowed us to amplify emotion and embrace a dramatic tone. The story moves through fear and courage, hand-wringing and heroic rescue.
At its heart, it is a story about coping, trying, and caring for one another. That spirit of connection through creative expression forms the quiet undercurrent of this series.
